Daycare Centre for Seniors

One longtime member of the Society’s Day Care Centre refers to it as her second home and says she loves the care, support, and genuine connections she finds there.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide organization of lay Catholics, following the call to serve the poor, the suffering, and those in need. In Antigua, the Society champions care for the elderly and infirm through its Day Care Centre for Seniors, which first opened its doors in 1990.

Seniors are warmly welcomed at the center each morning, where they can participate in activities such as playing cards or dominoes, as well as working on crafts and puzzles. They also enjoy a nutritious lunch and socializing with peers. Participants receive attentive care throughout the day, offering families the comfort of knowing their loved ones are well taken care of and not left alone at home.

The day care facility closed for three years due to damage caused by Hurricane Luis in 1995, and the Covid pandemic shut them down from 2020 to 2022. With help from the Mill Reef Fund, the facility was refurbished and reopened in March 2022 with a furnished lounge, a dining and activity area, a sleeping room with six beds and privacy screens, a commercial kitchen and pantry, and an office.

The Society is working to increase enrollment to pre-pandemic levels and rekindle its meal program, which provides a hot meal to the elderly and shut-ins in St. John’s and surrounding areas.
